Moving to a new state or country is stressful in and of itself. For kids, it can be especially so, so here are some thoughts on how to handle the transition.
Relocating to a new area or even a new country can be a difficult task for anyone. However, moving can often be very stressful for children, especially if they are too young to understand what is going on. With a little bit of preparation, you can make the transition to your new home as smooth as possible. |

You should begin preparing your children for a move once you are certain it will take place. The older the child is, the more notice should be given. This way they will have to time to process what moving means and how it will effect them. Before speaking to your children about relocating, find out information about your new town. Let your children know what school they will be attending and some of the attractions that can be found in their new city. If you can get brochures from your new area, this can help a younger child understand where they are going. Children often learn from visualizing things and having an image of what their new home will look like will help.
Children are often concerned about losing their friends and neighbors when they move. To ease their worries, print out “We’re moving!” fliers that they can pass out to their friends which contain their new address and phone number. You should supervise who your child gives these to and when, however. You don’t want to alert anyone who shouldn’t know that you will be departing the area.

| Prior to your move, you will want to give schools or daycare centers notice of your departure. This gives them time to provide you with any final bills, but also allows a chance for your child’s belongings to be gathered up. Have your records sent to the new school so that enrollment will not be delayed. Contact your pediatrician and have your medical record transferred. Make sure you have a copy of your child’s immunization record handy as their new school and daycare will likely require a copy before your child can begin class.
When packing, make sure you pack a special box for your child to open when they arrive. This box should be packed last in the moving truck and be specially marked. In it, place the child’s favorite bedding, any stuffed animals or toys that would comfort them, and a special pair of pajamas. Also include a favorite nighttime story book. Having these special items the first night will help ease the transition into your new home.
